Abstract | The function of this protein is unknown. It is restricted to bacteria and a few plants, such as Arabidopsis. The plant form contains an additional N-terminal region that may serve as a transit peptide and shows a close relationship to the cyanobacterial member, suggesting that it is a chloroplast protein. Members of this family are found in a single copy per bacterial genome, but are broadly distributed. A crystal structure of one member, YbaB from Haemophilus influenzae, revealed a core structure consisting of two layers, alpha/beta; YbaB forms a tight dimer with a 3-layer structure, beta/alpha/beta [12486730]. YbaB is co-transcribed with recR, which appears to protect DNA strands of the replilcation fork when it is blocked by DNA damage. A deletion of the YbaB operon resulted in increased sensitivity to DNA-damaging agents compared with the wild-type strain. |
